A bunion is a bony protuberance that is found at the joint at the base of the big toe. As is common with patients who have large bunions, the patient pictured was experiencing painful rubbing in her shoes as a result of her condition. After exhausting other conservative treatment methods, ultimately surgery seemed like the best option for this particular case. As you can see, 6 weeks after surgery, it's already looking much better than before! Her scar will continue to fade over the next few months as well.

There are many ways to treat bunions, including nonsurgical methods, but unlike other foot conditions, because a bunion is a bone deformity, it won't just go away on its own. In fact, over time if left untreated, bunions can grow & become even more painful & result in even further deformities in other parts of the foot.

To treat bunions, we first aim to relieve the pressure & pain which are usually most concerning to patients. We can do this in a variety of ways with bunion sleeves, protective padding, shaving calluses, prescribing custom orthotics, altering footwear, & physical therapy, among other options. 

Often in less severe cases, these treatment options can help correct the issue enough to prevent further damage & reduce pain. However, in other cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the protuberance & help bring the foot back into normal alignment. With bunionectomy procedures, as in the case pictured, you can immediately walk around on your feet after the procedure, and generally within a week you should be able to resume full activity.
